这首作品说来有趣，第一次听简直对许巍佩服的五体投地，一个放弃了高考没上过大学的人竟然还能写出英文歌来（抱歉，并没有贬低许巍的意思，当时的确是这么想的，呵）？象我这种上过那么多年英语课的不仅写不出来，也说不出来，更难堪的是甚至连无论怎么听也听不出来到底唱的是什么！这事可让我郁闷了好几年。在网上很多喜欢许巍的网友也在纷纷猜测其中的歌词，有的说不是英文歌，是其他某种语言的歌；有的没办法，竟然耐着性子戴着耳机反复的听，把里面每一个发音都用拼音的方式记下来；有的更神奇了，楞是根据许巍的哼唱“翻译”成了一首象模象样的“英文歌”，叹为观止！《遥远》的歌词简直成了许巍的一个谜。
后来终于是许巍解开了这个谜，《遥远》根本没歌词！里面的发音全都是随便哼的，有点类似于歌曲的demo版。真让大伙大跌眼镜。但事后想想，又让我佩服起他来了，许巍为什么不填词而选取这种哼唱的方式？是填不出词来吗？当然不是，那时候的许巍在歌词方面绝对不成问题，那是为什么呢？
答案只需要反复的聆听就能清楚了，这样的旋律，这样的编曲，这样的氛围，的确不再需要歌词，当中的哼吟恰到好处，空旷而悠远，飘渺而哀伤，特舒服的感觉，填上词的话感觉反而别扭。而歌名“遥远”一词已经足够让人遐想联翩，一如国画山水中的“留白”。想来，在当时，有谁会象许巍那样把这么一首“demo”版的歌曲正式发表呢？不得不佩服他的独特和对音乐的把握能力。
